The word “braai” comes from the Afrikaans “braaivleis”, which means grilled meat, and describes the South African barbecue. It is a social custom and a popular gathering in the country, and although it is an Afrikaans term, today it is used by people from many ethnic backgrounds. There is even a National Braai Day, celebrated on September, 24th.
